THE GALLERY - 26 CORK STREET, LONDON W1S 3ND
Our gallery is open Monday to Friday 9.30 am to 6 pm and Saturdays by appointment and during special exhibitions; our phone number is 020 7734 7800. Our clients are encouraged to visit the gallery at their own pace. We are glad to welcome frequent visitors or those clients with little time for just a few minutes, or to entertain clients who wish to browse at leisure for much longer.
We hold six major exhibitions of contemporary art in our gallery a year, and details of our full program can be found by clicking Exhibitions on the toolbar. We also maintain a permanent exhibition of contemporary paintings in our lower floor gallery with works by all our gallery artists to view. We are also happy to arrange for clients to view paintings in their homes or office spaces. In addition to our gallery work, we also participate at major art fairs in Europe, the Middle east and the States.
Visitors are welcome to sit down with a cup of tea or coffee (or something stronger) and look through our photograph albums that illustrate all paintings in our current contemporary stock, as well as the albums covering our Impressionist and Modern collection. We are happy to supply clients with more information on artists they may be interested in, and where possible show previous exhibition catalogues and images of previously sold works to help give a broader understanding of an artist's work and working methods.
THE BUSINESS
Ray Waterhouse and Jonathan Dodd started working together in 1982 and began their own business five years later. We opened a first floor gallery in Bond Street in 1989 dealing primarily in Impressionist and early modern British and European paintings. In May 2001 we opened our gallery in Cork Street with large gallery space on the ground and lower ground floors.
Shifting tastes in the market and previous experience in dealing in contemporary art, together with our move to one of the most famous streets in the world for modern and contemporary art galleries gave us the incentive to begin a major program of contemporary art. Jamie Anderson (whose background prior to joining W&D nine years ago was in contemporary art) and Jemimah Patterson administer the contemporary art program and work closely both with the artists and their collectors.
THE PAINTINGS
We represent established artists who, although working in traditional media, we feel have a unique style and a modernity that separates them from our stock of Impressionist and Early Modern paintings. Our emphasis is on originality and technical skill.
THE PRICE RANGE
With prices staring as low as £500, we hope to be able to cater for clients who are looking to start a collection, as well as serious collectors who may wish to purchase key pieces for up to £30,000. We also broker contemporary art, and are able to offer works of art by artists not part of our gallery stable. In general, paintings from our stock are priced at between £3,000 and £50,000 but we have on occasion handled much more expensive paintings. All our paintings are inclusive of VAT.
ADVISORY SERVICE
For the last few years we have also run Fine Art Brokers, an international art advisory service, which includes sourcing contemporary art for private and corporate collectors: Fine Art Brokers
